BUVI Scandinavia has delivered SRV-8 ROVs to Veiligheidsregio Utrecht (Dutch rescue service) and trained their ROV Pilots.
September 6, 2024 was a special day for Mario van Hattum, Regional Coordinator for Water Accident Control at VRU (Veiligheidsregio Utrecht).
Since then, Van Hattum has been busy choosing the desired type of underwater drone and the purchasing procedure. "It's great to see that the new team is now complete and the ROVs are actually going into the water."
A first milestone in a project that will last for two years. It falls under the leadership of the VRU innovation team, the staff comes from different posts in the province. Elsewhere in the country, ROVs are already being used for underwater searches by the fire brigades in Rotterdam and Gelderland-Zuid and by the national police team DLOS (Special Interventions Service), the police's underwater search team.
GETTING STARTED The sun rises slowly as ten firefighters from the greater region listen intently to an initial explanation about the underwater drone. Two Swedes, Fredrik Fleetwood and Rickard Forsman from the supplier BUVi Scandinavia came to Bosbad Leersum especially for the three-day training, plus an instructor, Shawn Devlin from the USA. Ian Jeffery from the Netherlands was involved in the tender as an adviser from Subsea Fundamentals, and is now helping with the technical training of the VRU operators in training.
INCREASING SAFETY The use of ROVs can increase the safety of fire brigade divers and increase search possibilities. Van Hattum: 'You see a development where the effort required of us, in addition to the traditional fire service, is becoming increasingly broad and often more dangerous. We are also increasingly faced with the choice of where we use people and where we use technology. If a building without people in it reaches the point during a fire that it is written off for insurance purposes, we send in robots in place of our people.
